Epic family session at Devil's Lake

I absolutely love being a family photographer in Wisconsin. We have beautiful seasonal changes and a lot of locations full of beauty. My husband is a native of Baraboo, so naturally he has spent a lot of time at Devil's lake. We frequently go to the lake in the summer to swim (especially since his parents still live there) and have gotten better about hiking there this year too (my girls weren't the most adventurous when they were littler and to be honest I probably was too protective of them too!). We did our own family sessions there twice now. Once in 2014 done by my amazing photographer friend Lane, from Alabama, who was in town to visit, and last year with the amazing Kayla of Kayla E. Photography as we did each other's families. However, I had never done a full session up on the bluffs. I was nervous about the sun but I knew it could be so gorgeous.

This amazing family is one of our closet friends and they frequent Devil's Lake probably 10x more than us! Their family loves hiking and adventuring and a Devil's Lake session fit them perfectly! We also were able to go right as the leaves were starting to change to get that beautiful fall color. I just adore this family and am obsessed with this session. Devil's Lake in Baraboo, Wisconsin is just amazing, don't you think?

I absolutely love being a posed newborn photographer. It is definitely challenging and tiring, but oh so rewarding. I love being able to snuggle these little babes and create priceless images for families so they can remember just how little their newest baby just was. Just out these sweet newborns and I'm sorry if I give you baby fever!

Spring blooms - Sun Prairie family and child photographer

It really makes me sad to think I may not be able to photograph any of my beautiful clients in spring blooms this year! And I have an inkling that it might be a really good year for flowering trees this year here in Wisconsin! I guess I could photograph my children in them, however we did the spring blooms last year so I don't think they will be too thrilled about doing it again :( Last year was a horrible year for flowers in Madison as we had crazy snow prior so the blooms were around for what, maybe a week? Many trees never even bloomed at all! But we still managed to get some great shots :) Here's a couple of my spring sessions last year to remanence :)

Barrett's Baby Plan Year - Sun Prairie baby photographer

Did you know that I offer 1 year packages to all of my newborn clients? I have three package options and the more sessions you choose, the more you save and get in the end. All packages include a complimentary smash and splash at the end of their first year. Here are Barrett's. Isn't he adorable? His family chose a full newborn session but Milestone sessions for the rest of his first year. And clients can mix and match what session types they want for each time! All of his sessions were done in my home studio in Sun Prairie and it was so fun to see him grow every 4 months! Check them out!

Hawaiian Vacation 2020 - Sun Prairie child photographer

Well I figured before I dove into client blog posts, (and since I finally finished editing our vacation pics, oops!) I'd share another personal picture post. Our trip to Maui this past January! I have been going to Hawaii with my family since I was 12 and I never tire of visiting this beautiful land! Here's some snaps I took while there, mostly images of my girls. It sure is hard coming back to the harsh winter of Madison, Wisconsin!

Oh my goodness! I just realized I haven't made a blog post all of 2019! I really need to get back in the game! I have photographed so many beautiful families, newborns, and kids last year too! Here's a favorite from fall. Kayla of Kayla E. Photography is a fellow photographer and friend so we decided to shoot each other's families this year. She was such a sport and traveled all the way to Devil's Lake from Sun Prairie per my request and even got some shots of my family up in the bluffs! I was really aching for some mountain pictures and this was as close as we could get in Wisconsin. How adorable is her family? Here's some favorites from her session.

A couple family's have a VIP status with Heather Beach Photography and this family is one of them. I love that I get to see them so often (especially the first year of their baby's lives)! These are also one of the smiliest, easy going kids I have photographed. They always make me smile during the whole shoot and the whole time I'm editing the photos.

Living in Sun Prairie, WI was a little rough this past year. Our apple trees didn't really bloom because of the weird spring weather we had, we had a TON of mosquitoes early spring and then late summer, and we BARELY had a fall. But we lucked out with the weather for this amazing maternity shoot. I had documented most phases of this family's pregnancy since they found out they were pregnant. She's a fellow photographer in Milwaukee and I was so honored that she was willing to drive an hour for photos 4 times this year (I also did some newborn ones for her).

Since I had a handful of mini or "short" newborn photo sessions in the last couple months (these sessions are shorter and include less digitals) instead of making multiple posts with only 5-10 images in each, I decided I'll just combine these sessions in one larger post (I'll probably do that for my fall mini's too :) )

Working with babies is such a blessing. These sweet little faces and getting in my cuddle fix pretty much is the best thing ever! I also love that I get to hang out and chat with new (or new again) moms; listen to their birth stories, chat about what it's like having a newborn again, etc. I just have to say, I have the BEST JOB EVER!

A "rainbow baby" is a baby born after a miscarriage, still birth or infant loss. This beautiful boy has 6 little angel sibling watching down on him!

I don't do too many high school senior shoots as I mainly focus on families and babies, but I absolutely adored this Senior Session. She was so much fun and I was able to make a fool out of myself in front of her, her sister, and mom (lets just say I fell and scraped my legs badly!) and they still trusted me to get amazing images for them, haha!

This young lady is going to do great things one day. She was so down to earth, well poised, incredibly sweet and a NATURAL model. I mean come on, look at these images! I had a huge gallery for her but here are her chosen images :)

WOW! I really have been lacking on my blogging. It's almost 2019 and I haven't blogged since spring! Get ready for a bunch of blog posts as I try and catch up on some of my awesome shoots from the past 6 months! (I have to share cause these families are awesome!)

Some of you Sun Prairie families have probably seen this adorable's family photos in a September edition of Sun Prairie Neighbors Magazine. I have started to partner with them to create features for their magazine. How cool is that?

Here are some of the chosen images for the magazine. This family was so fun and did so well despite the horrible mosquitoes that attacked us!

The {G} family - Downtown Sun Prairie

Just two nights ago our town suffered a horrible disaster. There was a gas leak causing an explosion and fires that lasted all night. Many businesses were demolished and we lost an amazing member of our community, a bar owner and volunteer firefighter who truly was the hero of the night. Our downtown will never be the same again. However, I have so proud to be part of a community that comes together when disaster strikes. Our entire little city jumped up to help wherever needed, restaurants were donating food, businesses donating supplies, families volunteering together to serve food or help evacuate people.

This family's session was done just a month before the explosion. Fellow photographer, Rachel Giblin of Rachel Manzke Photography and her family were being featured in Sun Prairie Neighbors Magazine and asked that I do their pictures for the magazine. I was so honored! Rachel has a studio downtown, about a block from the explosion, and she still doesn't know if her studio has any damage. Doing their family's session downtown was a great way to show how downtown Sun Prairie has become a part of who they are. It was an amazing night and great session. Seeing these images makes me a little sad knowing all that Rachel's business neighbors are going through and will have to overcome in the coming months and beyond. But we have to also look at these images with joy in that we know we are a town that can support each other and become stronger because of tragedy.

We will enjoy these images of Rachel and her beautiful family and know we are Sun Prairie Strong.

I just LOVE working with babies and kids, especially newborns. Scott and I are done having kids so being able to snuggle them at work is such a blessing. I am so honored that my photographer friend drove over an hour just for me to do her announcement pictures! How awesome is that!?! The weather hasn't been the best and everything still looks dry and dead, and there were still areas with ugly chunks of snow, but we were able to find a pretty spot to do their quick announcement shoot. This momma, a fellow photographer of Delicate Art Photography came up with this concept and with the help of her hubby (they are the owners of Mr & Mrs. and Co) made the words! I just LOVE this idea for an announcement! Simple, classy but original! I am SOOOOOO excited for them and I KNOW Mr.{J} is going to be the BEST big brother!

Family of 3 outdoor snow session

It's always flattering when a fellow photographer asks you to do their family photos. Brittany of Delicate Art Photography in the Milwaukee area and I have been friends for almost 3 years after meeting at a newborn shoot out. It's so great to have other photographer friends and to bounce ideas off of each other. She really wanted some outdoor snow pictures for her Christmas card but we literally only had dusting over by us in Madison. Thankfully the Milwaukee area had a bit of snow from one snow storm and I was able to come to her and do some pics on her property. How gorgeous is this land? I'm so jealous! Sun Prairie newborn photographer - Little {E} with her dog and cousins

When I did this momma's pre-session consultation, she told me she'd really like to get two specialty shots done at her session. 1. get some photos with baby girl and their dog (plus a family shot with all 4 of them) and 2. get a "Do Not Mess With Her" shot with the cousins since she is the first girl cousin after 5 boys! I knew these requests would be challenging but I'm so happy with the outcomes. I have to say this dog was the most well behaved dog I ever met! And it was fun playing with the boy cousins the morning we did that shot. Miss {E} did so well for her session and I have so many favorites, I had to show the whole gallery! What's your favorite?

Six month photos of Mr {B} - Sun Prairie baby photographer

It's always amazing to me how much babies change in the first 6 months. All babies are adorable as a newborn, but by the time they are 6 months, you can REALLY see what their little features look like and how they will look as a toddler/kid. And sometimes I feel like they change SO much between the newborn stage and baby stage. Mr {B} is such a cutie and was all smiles and full of personality at his sitter session. This family really lucked out because we had a super warm November day for their session. I want to say it was low 70s, high 60s! And even though all the leaves were gone, we found a pretty outdoor location. They brought their dog and even though she wasn't a fan of me :( I was able to get some good shots of her with the family (Because yes, dogs are a part of the family) :) Here are some favorites from their session at a park in Sun Prairie.

Baby {G} is 3 months! -Sun Prairie baby photographer

I am so glad I get to photograph this gorgeous girl every 3 months since her parents chose to do my baby plan! I also did their maternity and her newborn pictures! Miss {G} came to the studio in Sun Prairie this November with her brother. We got a couple images with her brother, but she was NOT having it! Could hardly be comforted and Mom was so confused what was going on. We were able to get solo pics of big bro but little "G" was pretty much boycotting pictures. We decided to just try another day as we couldn't fix whatever the problem was. Mom left and big bro went off to daycare and miss "G" snoozed some more in the car (even though she had a good nap before the shoot too). Once she woke up, mom called me and asked if she could come back over. Since I'm a custom photographer and usually don't over schedule myself, this was able to happen. We tried again that afternoon and little {G} was a totally different baby. I'm so glad I was able to put the session on hold so I could give this family these precious images of {G} at this 3rd month stage. Isn't she adorable?

Newborn {I}'s photo session - Sun Prairie newborn photographer

Sweet little {I} came to me this fall for his newborn session. Once I got him out of his car seat, I could see he was super sleepy (how I hope all baby's come). We started the session but mom and dad warned me that he'd probably want to eat again in the next hour or so. I kept thinking he was going to wake up at any time, but we kept continuing the session until he did. Guess what? He didn't wake up the ENTIRE session! He did fuss and make some grunting noises, but I was able to do his whole session without one single feeding break! He did take a long feeding as soon as we were finished, but boy he earned it! I got SO many shots of him and there are so many favorites! Mom loves chickens, and Dad loves foxes, so we had to incorporate both of those animals into the session. How adorable is he?

Christmas mini sessions - Sun Prairie family photographer

This year I was incredibly fortunate to be able to use a vintage truck for my Christmas Mini's. A friend actually came to me saying they had a contact of a woman who would be willing to let me use her amazing truck. We were even able to use a private residence for the sessions with great evergreen trees. I just love how these vintage truck Christmas mini's turned out.

Extended family at Madison Museum of Contemporary Art - Sun Prairie Family photographer

When the weather forecasted for the day of this extended family shoot was supposed to be in the teens and you have small children in the family, you find an alternate location. The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art was perfect for their family shoot. It had beautiful light and we were even able to run outside on the rooftop for a couple minutes to get one group shot! Hint to other photographers; pose families inside before going outside and then once you are out, they know exactly where to go and you don't waste time on telling people where to stand :) I even got to do a teeny tiny newborn shoot with Mr. {K}. He was pretty tired at the end of the shoot and I was able to shush him to sleep and do one pose in a crate. LOVE!

Two families joined - Sun Prairie family and couple photographer

It's so beautiful when two families are joined into one. These two got engaged so we did some engagement pictures. We lucked out that the leaves were still on the trees for this November shoot and it wasn't brutally cold yet (though it was a bit nippy). We also did a family shoot with their kids. They were ALL so sweet and got along very well. The kids joked around with each other and I could tell they already had a strong bond with each other.

Being a Madison portrait photographer, our falls can be a bit unreliable. This family wanted to make sure to have amazing fall colors for their family photos (even though many times I "create" fall colors to not so fall colors, shhhh ) :) Because of this, and the fact that we had some icky days on scheduled session days, we had to reschedule their session twice! But the third time was a charm and we had GORGEOUS weather! It was low 70s with amazing light. What do you think? Here's some favorites from their session.

I am so thankful I got to photograph so many families this fall. All of the families were so amazing, even with all the session reschedules. (There was a tornado, plus I had rescheduled some sessions thinking fall colors were coming early, but then a heat wave stalled everything and I scheduled them back later in the month again). This fall really had be going crazy but I'm super happy with the end results!

I do have to say, we really lucked out with the weather this year for Fall Mini Sessions. It was mostly very warm and mild, which makes it so much easier for the kids. I met this sweet family last year at my tree farm mini's. Little {G} was so sweet, but VERY unsure of the whole photo session thing. See, she had just been adopted and brought into the US from China a couple months prior, so one could imagine all the new experiences she was having. Of course she'd be a little timid. Fast forward to this summer when I met them for their session. She was SO talkative, giggly and full of joy, loving every minute she interacted with her parents. This little girl sure is blessed with amazing parents, and they are blessed to be hers. It was such an honor to see the strides she's taken and to document it for this family!

I just love this sweet girl. She brings a smile to my face every time I see her. Usually 2-year-olds are very difficult at their sessions as they know what they want at that age and usually it's running around and exploring everything and not staying still for longer then .5 seconds! Miss {G} did so well for her session. Yes, she wanted to run off and explore a bit, but she also did such a good job of "showing" us how she could sit on a chair/crate/dance and sing along to songs (and laugh at my silly noises). She is getting so big and as beautiful as ever!

Extended family session in Sun Prairie

I can't believe I forgot to blog this session from Memorial Day weekend. This was a VERY important shoot as it was done because one brave guy was leaving his family again for his 3rd deployment the day after the session. All of the family were getting together for his daughter's birthday party and it worked out perfectly to do an extended family session after the party. We had to work with 3pm afternoon lighting, but a local park in Sun Prairie provided enough shade for us! (We had threats of rain and I'm so thankful that didn't happen!). It was so much fun getting to know this family and letting me capture them.

As a family and child photographer, I'm always looking for new locations and areas to do sessions. I have a good 4-5 that are my staples, but always keep my eyes open for new places. I had one location in mind that I had checked out last year, but never shot there. I had recently done a session with my girls so they were NOT going to allow me to shoot them again, haha (I always like to try a new location first before using it with a client). Thankfully my sister and niece were coming over and the weather was going to be perfect for a little mini shoot. I talked them both into coming with me (and Brianna (my oldest) as her and her cousin are glued at the hip when they get together; and ice cream may have been mentioned for after the shoot!) So I found a dress I had in Elli's size, let her pick out a headband or halo (they all choose halo's now, hehe) and we headed out for golden hour. The location was great, but with all the rain we had in the last week, we couldn't go to the other areas I was hoping to check out. And there were also a bunch of pesky flies! It was so weird, we were bothered by flying, buzzing buggers, but none of us really got bit by any mosquitoes. I think they were more flies then mosquitoes (we noticed this in my backyard that night too when we were eating dinner). Anyway, what do you think of this location? This is mostly just one area as Elli didn't last long, but I'm digging the yummy light!

Extended family sessions are so special because it's a time to capture the WHOLE family, something that rarely happens. It's even more important when some family members are coming from halfway across the U.S. We had ONE night to do this shoot and it was calling for rain all week. I was so nervous and we were trying to think of alternatives if we couldn't do a golden hour session at the park. THANKFULLY, the rain held off and we could do the session as planned. We were able to get multiple variations in and this family was so fun and relaxed, even with the rain scare. Sharing a lot, because I can't help it!

As a photographer in Sun Prairie, WI, we have some LONG winters. Once the trees start to bud in late April and the weather becomes warmer, I do a little happy dance! Even though May should be a warmish month, sometimes it can be super chilly. I've been lucky that when I had important family sessions scheduled (extended family sessions) that the weather cooperated for us. How great is this extended family? These sessions are always so important to get and are so special for the grandparents especially. I believe you can see the sweetness of these kiddos from their pictures. It was such fun session!

Madison Family Photographer - The {H} family in spring blossoms

Spring is such a beautiful season, isn't it? As a Sun Prairie family photographer, when the spring blossoms start popping out, I get warm fuzzies. For one, it's so darn pretty. But for two, it means that my outdoor season has kicked off! These pretty apple blossoms only bloom for about 1 week, so we have to be quick. Unfortunately last year, I think the flowers were on the trees for 1-2 days before a strong wind blew them all to the ground :(

This family was lucky to get to shoot at the Apple Orchard and we had a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L night! Here are some favorites.

I seriously love being a Sun Prairie Newborn photographer. Newborns are challenging, but so rewarding. This session was a little different though, as we focused on the family and siblings, instead of the typical posed newborn style I usually do. I was still able to get some sweet shots of newborn {R} but also get some shots of his big siblings too! Working with kids is one of the reasons I chose to be a family photographer and smelling these kids "stinky feet" to get some genuine smiles was probably the highlight of my day. This family is so beautiful, inside and out and I'm so glad I was able to capture these images for them. Hopefully they will have some displayed nice and big in their new home (yes, they moved in right before baby was born; which was supposed to be after since little man decided to show up 8 weeks early!) This family is pretty much a superhero family right now and they are rocking having 4 kids!

This baby girl is just so sweet! I was so excited to meet her since last year I had done her parents engagement pictures and then did their maternity session earlier this year. See that session HERE. She did so well and I went over the time I should have for a mini session because I had so much fun playing with her. In the beginning of her session, she was VERY awake and alert, yet very calm, and had the best eye contact I've ever seen from a newborn. It was fun to see those little peepers for a little bit and then she zonked out for me!

The sitting milestone is my absolute favorite with babies. Parents love it too because baby can finally start to sit unassisted and play with toys, babies love it because they don't have to constantly be on their back or tummy anymore, and I love it because it's so cute to photograph, babies tend to smile easily at this stage, and it's before they start trying to crawl away, haha!

Sun Prairie portrait photographer - Our Hawaiian Vacation

I have been sitting on these photos for months meaning to put them in a blog post to share them. At the end of January our family went to Hawaii with my parents, sister and niece. This is usually an annual thing, however this may have been our last trip :( While there I wanted to get lots of photos of the girls, though they were less then thrilled so we didn't go scoop out locations as much as I wanted, but instead used what was around us. Still worked! My favorite photos though are our family photos done at a beach called "Slaughterhouse Beach" in Maui, great name, huh! Haha. Here's some favorites from our shoot.

Here are some more from other mini sessions I had with the girls. P.s. shooting on the beach when the sun sets over the ocean is HARD. Sun was super harsh all the way till sunset!

Technically I can't call this sweet baby girl a newborn as she was 6 weeks old when I saw her, but she mostly slept like a newborn and was tiny like one :) When her mom contacted me while I was on vacation trying to get a session booked, I was scared she'd book someone else since I wasn't returning to Wisconsin for another week. But she held off and waited for me! I'm so glad she did because little {L} was just precious! I definitely didn't do a lot of my normal "posing" like I do with 1-2 week old, but I just adore how this session turned out; especially since a 6 week old means the chance of getting a social smile with eye contact, which I got! (Mom said she started smiling the day before; talk about great timing!) Here are some favorites!

When I received an email from a client that was scheduled for one of my Fall Mini slots for the next day, saying her son had fallen at the park and split his lip open and they couldn't come to their mini, I sent out a message in my VIP Facebook group. Within 25 minutes I had the slot filled. Who came to my rescue (and I to theirs as they were hoping to get a mini in for Christmas cards)? This beautiful family. With 3 young kids, sometimes us parents have to just relax and know that the pictures we get may not be perfect, but they will still show what life looks like in this very moment, which is still important to remember. But boy, this family rocked their 20 minute session! Besides the heavy wind, I'd say this was a successful mini!

The {K} family and their dog

It love it when families ask to bring their dog to their family session. It can be challenging if the pups are a little excitable, but yet is so much fun! This beautiful puppy was only a couple months old and did an amazing job sitting for a couple photos with the family. I didn't even have to hold treats up to get his attention! It worked out perfectly to do a 5 minute shoot with him, and then he could hang out in the car for the rest of the family's shoot.

As much as I love my job, sometimes I'm just am not in the mood to leave my family and go to a shoot (doesn't happen often though!). But once I show up to my shoot I'm always better and ready to go. On the day of this family's shoot, I had an extra hard time leaving home because my girls were super snuggly and we were enjoying a lazy afternoon. But once this family walked up, little {E} immediately pulled me out of the funk I was in. She has SO much personality and still so sweet! We had a lot of fun together, from skipping down the path hand in hand, to me running after her tickling her. She was so funny, my cheeks hurt by the end of the shoot. If her little sister is anything like she is, their parents are in for an entertaining life!

The {R} family Session

I don't know how many times we have tried to do a session for this amazing family. A couple years ago, we had a session on the books but had to reschedule because of crazy weather and a make up date wasn't working since they were so busy and then it got too cold. This year, we had to reschedule once in the summer because of the family's schedule had something pop up that they had to go to, then we had a super rainy day and had to reschedule again! When the following weekend showed rain again, I was very worried we'd never get to do their session. We prayed and prayed the rain would hold off, and then stop once it started and thankfully we were able to sneak in a quick session within a 1/2 hour time that the rain stopped! Our feet were all soaked by the end of the session, but it didn't' rain on us! It's amazing how fast you can get a session done when the kids are older, haha!

I was very excited when a former client of mine contacted me wanting to schedule their annual family photos and that they were expected baby #2! We decided to do an outdoor family session with some lifestyle newborn photos. I usually do posed newborn photos, but I was excited to try this more lifestyle approach. The poses aren't "perfected" but I also love how raw they are; seeing how baby "R" likes to bring her hands right up to her face or see her many expressions as she wasn't quite in a "milk coma" as most of my newborn clients are when I'm working with them. It was definitely fun and I'll have to do more sessions like this in the future! How gorgeous is this family though, I mean, really!

Family of 5 - the {H} family

This past year, I have changed the structure of how I do sessions. For awhile, I was doing only full sessions (which are my favorite because I really get a chance to hang out with families and capture more then the traditional poses and also get a lot of variety), however I was getting a lot of feedback that families really missed my "short" family sessions. Some families have young children and they know their kids won't last 1-2 hours during a shoot (although I try and make it as fun as possible). Since this fall, I have brought back my varied length sessions. It's actually quite amazing how many pictures you can get in just a half an hour! I now have an all inclusive pricing structure and my "short family sessions" include 10 digital images. I show more images in each gallery and offer a chance for families to purchase more then the 10 that is included in their session in case they love them all. The{P} family's fall photo session

Even though little "L" turned one in July and I no longer get to see her every three months for photos, I was able to see her at 15 months for their family's annual fall session. We really lucked out this year in that we had such gorgeous weather this fall. Most sessions were in the 60s or 70s (though some had a lot of wind). The night we did this session, it was just perfect, besides the mosquitoes! Who would think we'd still have mosquitoes at the end of October!?! Well as usual, this family never disappoints. When I get asked to photograph an extended family, I sometimes get nervous about making sure I have enough time to photograph everything in that needs to be captured. This family made it so easy on me! They were incredibly friendly, sweet and the kids were such good listeners. They did so well even though we were eaten alive by the mosquitos! It really was a fun shoot! Extended family sessions are very important to do and mean so much for the grandparents! I'm very glad we fit this shoot in when one of the siblings and his family came back to Wisconsin for a visit.

Usually when I'm asked to photograph a family, it's a family with younger children. I pack my bag with smarties, and get ready to use all of my "tricks" to try and get the little ones to smile for their family pictures. But once in awhile, I get to photograph families with older children. I know families with older children don't get their photos done every year because their kids don't change as fast as those little kid years, however it is STILL SO IMPORTANT to capture your family as it is, even when you have those teenagers who aren't super willing to do a photo shoot on a Friday or Saturday night. I know these kids weren't super excited for their shoot, but there were such good sports. We still laughed and had fun playing into their personalities a bit :) They also made it so easy on me since I didn't have to play "Peek a boo", or get them to say silly sayings; Although I did have to use "don't you smile" on Dad (j/k Mike!) Sun Prairie portrait photographer - Miss{L} turns one!

It has been such an honor photographing this sweetie every three months for the past year. I'm really sad that I won't get to see her so often anymore (though I am doing their family photos in October, yay!). She is probably the happiest baby I've ever photographed. She is so go with the flow and I was able to try out so many ideas on her throughout the year. Here's a little compilation storyboard I made for her momma of her first year that she has hanging in her room!

For Miss {L}'s one year photo shoot, we were able to bring back the curved stool I used for her newborn photos (my first time using the stool and my first outdoor newborn photos!). We also did an outdoor cake smash and a tub session (so smash and splash session!). I just adore how they turned out!

I truly love meeting new families. It's one of the best things about my job. This family was so sweet and I loved hearing their story. They have three beautiful children and had to go through so much with their youngest including long NICU stays and open heart surgery. We actually had to reschedule their first session because he needed his heart surgery sooner then they expected. But he is incredibly strong and such a fighter. Some people may think having a child with Down Syndrome is a burden, but I have seen through multiple families how much of a blessing it is. This little guy is a testament to that!

I did a tea party session with my girl's last year and it was one of the most fun I've had taking pictures of them. They usually aren't too thrilled to do a session (photographer's child syndrome is real!), but they still ask to do another tea party session. I decided to do a stylized tea party session for a couple clients. It was complete with dresses and accessories to borrow (the little girls seemed to love to choose their own dress!), decor and cookies and apple juice. I'd say it was a success and I may make this an annual thing!

It's always fun when you get to do a shoot for someone you know. This is our 4k teacher and her family. I say "our" because she was both my oldest's teacher (Brianna who is now going into 3rd grade) and my middle daughter, Kaylee. I pray Avery gets her in two years too! Both just absolutely adored her! She was able to get to know my kiddos and it was fun being able to hang out with her family for a night. Her kids were so amazing and they just love each other so much; it's so great to see! I'm sure you can see the love just oozing from these photos! :)

I have had the pleasure of being able to photograph this gorgeous girl since she was 6 weeks old. She is just the sweetest thing and just warms my heart whenever I see her. This family sure lucked out weather wise for their session. It was FREEZING (like winter, wear your winter coat cold) the whole weekend, until about 2 hours before their session. It wasn't the warmest out, but was definitely doable for a session!

It is always fun to do extended family sessions because I know how special they are. It's hard to get everyone together for a session and these pictures don't get taken every year. It was really fun getting to know little "O" (who did so well!) and his parents, grandparents and aunt. He sure is a loved little boy! Enjoy!

I am SO excited that it is spring (almost summer) here! Being in the Madison, Wisconsin area, we can have LOOOOOOONG winters. I love that I have an in home studio to do shoots throughout the winter, but man it feels good to get outside!

This was my first outdoor shoot of the season, and boy did they make it fun. I know for the teenagers, doing a photo session wasn't their idea of a fun Friday night, but they were such good sports. I loved seeing them interact with their little sister and just have fun with each other. I even made them "attack" mom and dad, haha. This was a great session to start off the family portrait season!

I just recently started having clients come back to the studio for a Reveal Session for them to see and pick out their images. It has been such an amazing experience because I get to truly see what they think of their images (helps give me some feedback on what people like) and I get to experience the emotion they feel from seeing their images for the first time. This momma may or may not have cried during her Reveal :) I have to say, seeing tears in my clients' eyes just warms my heart. I want to make sure my clients absolutely LOVE the images that I give them. When they say, "It's too hard to choose which ones to hang," I know I did my job :) Of course when you photograph such sweet, adorable babies like Mr {A}, it makes it easy for me to get shots that are loved. :)

I have had the honor of knowing this sweet baby girl's momma for about 4 years through our local MOPS group. I have been able to photograph there family a number of times including Miss {A}'s newborn photos. See a newborn photo of hers here . I loved being about to photograph {A} again for her 1 year session in my Sun Prairie home studio. She wasn't digging the pictures at first, but after a milk snack and some momma cuddles, she was all smiles. (until the end; look at last pic).

I met Mr {G} and his family this year at my fall mini's this year. He is just so adorable and I was thrilled when his momma contacted me for his 9 month photos. Unfortunately I think something was bothering him that day as he wasn't as smiley as he normally is (per mom). However we still got some great shots including one that his mom really wanted with his dad's deer antlers. I just love that one and his mom ordered a wood print of it and it was just perfect! And his big blue eyes are to die for!

I took a break from blogging for a couple weeks but need to get back on the train as I still have a bunch of sessions from 2015 to blog! I just love this family. I met the mom when we were in college and I got to be roommates with her for 2 years. And she and her husband (then boyfriend) pretty much helped me and my husband get together! We now both live in the Madison area and her daughter is only 3 months older then my Kaylee. We definitely need to get together more often then what we do! And hopefully I'll photograph them again this summer as a baby BOY joins their family!

Even though I'm super busy in October doing Fall Mini's, I'm so glad I also make sure to save room for regular family sessions. This one was SO much fun; well it always is when you have a 2 year old, right? I met this family this summer when I did my first newborn model call since I had some new props I wanted to try out and didn't have a baby girl coming around that time. It worked out perfectly because I had a model for my props and mom said she was looking for a photographer. It was meant to be! We then did their family shoot this Fall when little {L} was 3 months old and are doing her 6 month next weekend. I'm excited to see how big she is! And how sweet is this family? I love seeing parents interact with their kids and capturing those moments!

Fall 2015 Mini Sessions!

What a great fall we had, right? Most of my sessions were just the perfect temperature! Fall 2015 Mini Sessions were such a success! The only negative was that my location I had in mind all year for them ended up not having good fall colored trees, so I had to use a location I had used a previous year (though 3 years ago) and it is a little "busier" there then other areas, but oh so gorgeous! My favorite is the "tree tunnel" as I call it. The kids seemed to love it too! Be prepared for a LOT of pics in this post of all the beautiful families that came out for Fall Minis this year!

The {H} Family at State Street!

I'm usually a natural location shooter, but the {H} Family requested we do their session by the Capital and State Street. I'm so glad they did because it was so much fun and I got to capture them in an environment that was special to them (they met at college at UW-Madison)! It also was nice to do something different from I was used to doing, pushing me to grow as a photographer. I'm planning on doing more shoots down there next summer/fall!

Little {L} also had fun at the shoot picking out areas for me to photograph her. She even was the "photographer" for the picture of her mom and dad! (I did have to change my camera to auto focus for her, but SHHHHHH don't tell her! She did so great!)

I am just thrilled that I get to see this cutie pie every three months. She is just the smiliest, sweetest, baby! Her parents also give me full reign in how to style the session and I always have so much fun with it! She modeled a new little romper for me too! I just love these little up-cycled rompers. I need to invest in more of them!

I have been SO bad with blogging this year. But I am making myself be better about it in 2016! I MUST! Haha. So to start, I'm going to catch up on the Fall 2015 sessions and then get into my current sessions. So be ready for a lot of blog posts!!!!!

FIRST UP are the {M} twins. These girls are just the sweetest and I've been fortunate enough to be able to photograph them since they were 3! They have eyes to DIE FOR and are just so sweet with each other. We had fun running in the field, jumping off my bench I brought and pulling each other in the wagon. I also love capturing their relationship with their mom; she always hops in for a few during their sessions. I think it's SO important to get in the pictures with our children!

As a photographer, I feel like time flies by even faster for me. When returning parents schedule a new photo session for their kids because they are 6 months, or 9 months or a year already, I always get caught off guard with how quick that time passed! I can't believe that Mr. {B} is already a year old. I seriously feel like I just photographed his momma's maternity session and did his newborn session. Kids need to stop growing up so fast!!!!!!! :) Well this little guy was all smiles for his session and certainly made my job easy. He is such a cutie too!

WI area Shoot Out - Sun Prairie and Madison Portrait Photographer

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to travel down to the Milwaukee area and meet up with about 8 other photographers for a Shoot Out. What an amazing time! It was great to converse and connect with other photographers and do what we love! Two of the lovely ladies hosted the Shoot Out and found 3 newborn models and 2 maternity models (though I left before the second one arrived). Here are a couple of the shots I took. It's always a sad time when a client (and also a friend in this case) moves away. I had been taking pictures of this family since their oldest (4years) was born. But sadly they moved out of state right after their third child was born. I was able to do his newborn pictures before they left (one pictured below). How cute is he in the police outfit just like his daddy.

I was so excited when I got the call that the family was coming back (since the sold their house) and that we could do Mr. {B}'s 6 month pictures! He has changed so much but still looks so much like his big brother and sister. He is such a calm, happy, baby too. I think mom needs to make a trip back here this winter when all the kids have their birthdays!

Avery's 1 Year Pictures

Well my little Avery is already 13 months old and I finally finished her 1-year photos last week. I guess that's what happens when it's your third child and have a BUSY May with birthday parties, dance recitals and end of school functions! I can't believe Avery is already technically a "toddler" even though she's not even close to actually toddling around. (She's very content crawling and doesn't even like to stand assisted). She has SO much personality already and is a social little butterfly! She loves to give kisses, wave, dance, eat (anything!), play with her sisters, and snuggle. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AVERY!

Two weeks ago my daughter had her dance recital. It's her second year dancing with Madison Dance Academy and this year she was in a combo class with ballet and jazz. That meant she was in two dances! I think she loved being in more then one dance (and that one dance was in the first act and the other was in the 3rd act, so she got to hang out backstage with friends pretty much the whole recital)! I took some pics of her in her costumes and also some while she danced during her dress rehearsal. Looking at these remind me how FAST my baby is growing up. I still can't believe I have a 7-year-old who will be a second grader soon!

The {M} family

This was the second year I have gotten to photograph this amazing family. Their girls are all 3 years apart and I joked that it was like my family in 5 years (this was before they got their little boy). While scheduling their family pictures last year, something amazing happened; they got word of a little boy that was born that needed a home. They were able to foster him and then later adopt him. I love hearing about adoption stories! It was a blessing to see this family fall in love with that little boy last year, but hard at the same time as it wasn't a final placement yet. So this year was pure joy because I was photographing this little boy with his forever family! And you can see how much is big sisters adore him! They are having his adoption party next month and I love that some of these images will be used for it. Congratulations {M} family on your adoption and your beautiful family!

Newborn {C} - Sun Prairie, WI newborn photographer

How adorable is little {C}? He sure made me work though, hehe. Mom and Dad came in for a newborn mini. So, a 1, 1 1/2 hour shoot, right? Not quite :) Well after 2 hours and only get 1 shot, we decided to try again another day. Usually I just try to wrap babies and get some awake shots (and then they usually doze off while wrapped), but this little guy had other plans. He kicked out of every wrap I did (and I did some really tight!) and was just not happy :( He wanted to eat the whole time and maybe was just needing to cluster feed at that time. He also hated to have a wet diaper (or no diaper at all!). But once he came back just a week later, he was such a different baby. So much more content! He still didn't like his diaper off, and didn't like to be posed too much, but he was definitely a lot more calm. He got some good full feedings and was happy even when he was awake. I'm so glad we tried again!

I can't tell you how excited I am that it's the season of outdoor sessions! I love doing studio pictures, but when you are forced to for months on end because it's too cold to go outside, sometimes takes the fun out of it. Now I'll be able to use some creative juices and be inspired by the great outdoors! We kicked off this season with some Spring Mini's. Here's some of my favorites!

It is such a privilege when I get repeat clients. Not only have I been photographing Mr{E}'s big sis since she was born, but this family has referred so many of their friends and family. I'm so grateful. I don't do much marketing, so word of mouth goes a long way for me :) I also love when families come back to me so I can see their kids grow and meet new siblings! Little {E} was so adorable and did such a great job during his pictures. He even woke up at the end and gave some great eye contact. He was very wide-eyed when he was awake, but just as adorable!

And when big sis doesn't want to come and take pictures, but will if she can wear the goggles in the play bin, you let her wear goggles! Haha. I just LOVE this picture! We did talk her into taking some pictures without them too :)

Mr{J} Turns 1!

Mr.{J} came to see me a couple months ago (since I'm trying to blog some past sessions since I was not very good about blogging this year). He was so cute but not very into my camera. He gave me many looks like "What are you doing!?!" It's amazing how little 1-year-olds still seem, but really, they already have so much personality and KNOW what they want and like! I loved photographing this little dude's eyes though, whether he was smiling or not!

I am SO bad at blogging but I'm going to try to make sure to do it for every session from here on out (and try to do some past sessions too!). Little {K} came to see me for her newborn pics a couple weeks ago. She's so beautiful! Her big bro also came for some 2 year pics. It was fun seeing him because I did his newborn pictures! He was such a cutie and full of personality! He was very excited to be a big brother and was already very protective. As I got set ups ready for his little sister, he'd motion for me get his sister, and wanted me to bring things over for her. He did so well during the sibling and family shots and kept on kissing her! It sure was fun to see a 2-year-old be that into a new sibling!

I love having return clients, it's the best compliment you can give a photographer. I've been able to do maternity pics for this family when they were expecting their almost 3 year old. Then I continued to photograph this family for the past three years and now got to do their maternity and newborn pictures of their little man! It is so much fun to be able to see a family grow! Here are their maternity pic, and below I'll post Mr {B}'s newborn photos.

And Mr {B} came to me at 11 days new and he did so well. He wasn't a fan of being posed at first, but then slept nicely, even though he still was strong willed about keeping his fingers in a fist. He's cute, so I let it go :)

I am so incredibly behind on my blogging! I blame it on having a 3 month old and still trying to juggle life with three kids while getting back into work. I did pictures for this gorgeous family two weeks ago at their house. They have a great backyard with woods, and stone paths. These two kids were so good and sweet too! They did great through 3 outfit changes!

My little Avery is 6 weeks old already, I can't believe it! I think it's time to finally do a blog post sharing the newborn pictures. I was wondering if I'd have enough energy to do her pictures myself, and though it was hard, I got them! It also helped that I could split it up between multiple days. I did however get too tired to try and do family pictures though.

This little girl is so special to this family. They went through a lot to get her, and also went through a lot during the pregnancy. She ended up being born at 32 weeks but only stayed in the hospital 2 1/2 weeks! She was still only 4ish lbs when she came to see me. For a preemie, she rocked her shoot (beware, there are a lot of pics on this blog post)! Was still very "curly" and slept like a dream. I'm so happy for this family!

Birthday Kiddos

One of the best things about my job is being able to watch so many kids grow. I've done pics for these kiddos since both were newborns (though I also see them every week at our Life Group Bible Study). I love that I have so many return clients and that I get to experience different milestones with them! I can't believe that little {V} is already THREE and her lil bro is already 1! Where has the time gone? Happy Birthday kiddos!

First Blog Post in a LONG TIME {Sun Prairie Baby Photographer}

I admit, I've been a very, very lazy photographer in terms of blogging. I think I stopped over a year ago. I was also using a different site that made it really hard to post big pictures like I was wanting. So, I'm starting it up again! Last weekend I was able to finally get back into regular sessions after being on vacation, then having the flu go through our whole family, and last having our furnace die on us (no one wants to do a session in a house that's 40 degrees, right!?!).

I was happy that many clients were flexible with me and were able to reschedule their sessions, including the parents of these cutie pie 3 month old twins. Twins are so much fun, but also challenging. I was fortunate to photograph momma's maternity session, and their newborn session. They also are already scheduled for their 6 month session! These little ones weren't completely overjoyed to get their pictures taken (3 month schedules are so hard because they still eat and sleep regularly) but we were able to get some pretty cute pics of them.
